The EMBABE Diaries

Mum’s The Word

This month’s surprise parenting heroes: Russian cartoons.

Yes, you heard it right, Japanese animation is totally passe, Rossiya is where the cartoon action is these days – at least in the 0-10 age bracket. To some extent, it was obvious that this would happen, given the amazing talent out there; I have yet to see better illustrations for children’s books than in the Russian storybooks of my childhood.

First, there are the amazing Fixiki (aka The Fixies) – beautiful, educational, love them! And I’m not alone – I’ve found at least one more parent in my EMBA class who swears by Fixiki. fixikiThe Fixies are – let me quote the brand propaganda here for a moment “the launching pad for the multi-platform project “The Fixies”, an animated brand designed for the international market based on Eduard Uspensky’s short story The Wee Warranty Workers”. Fixies are tiny people who live inside every man-made appliance and, of course, fix everything – a perfect opportunity to teach kids about physics and how stuff works. The stories are great, the animation is beautiful, I just wish I could find the full series in English somewhere! And, of, course they have the catchiest theme song ever: Vova, sing with me: “A kto takie Fixiki? Bolshoi, bolshoi sekret!”

And I also have to mention the delightful Masha and The Bear. mashaAccording to the series creators, “Masha and the Bear are heroes of Russian folklore, known to all Russian children. Masha is an exceedingly active little girl who can’t sit still on one place and has to make everything a business of her own. The Bear is a big and hearty guy who loves comfort and quietness.”. Let me tell you, they are hilarious! And they have an official You Tube channel, so at least watch one – you’ll be hooked! It’s all in Russian, but don’t worry, you’ll get it.

Another thing I loved – since this is an EMBA blog, after all – is how good the websites are and how well the brands are developed. I am keeping my fingers crossed that Masha and Fixiki take over the cartoon world, I’ve already seen The Fixies on Animax in Romania, so that’s a great start!
